ANGELS
Lesson 3: Angels and Art Work
Learning objectives:
To look at artists' impressions of angels and learn more about
angels from these.
To realise that God uses angels as messengers.
To experience a sense of awe and wonder about angels.
Resources:
A copy of "Angels Flying over St. Davids Cathedral by Jackie Morris,
other examples of artists impressions of angels e.g.
postcards of stained glass windows, a collection of Christmas cards featuring
well-known artists,
Christmas stamps depicting angels,
suitable art materials for childrens work.
Plan:
- Show the pupils a collection of artists impressions of angels. If possible,
get a variety of scenes such as angels flying e.g.
Jackie Morris painting,
angels bringing news e.g. angels visiting the shepherds,
angels playing musical instruments.
- Discuss the similarities and differences between the work.
- What do the angels have in common?
- Do the children know any stories about angels?
- Choose a biblical story to read and discuss with the pupils e.g.
Jacobs vision of angels (Genesis 28: 10-13* / 10-22)
The angel Gabriel visits Mary (Luke 1:26-38)
The angels visit the shepherds (Luke 2:8-20*)
* Suitable for KS2 pupils to read from a Good News Bible, the other stories
would be better read from a story Bibl).
- What role do the angels have?
- Why do you think God uses angels?
Ideas for activities:
- Produce a class collage depicting a host of angels. Materials such as different
fabrics, feathers, foil, glitter etc. could be used.
Decide on a theme. Perhaps the children would like to illustrate the Bible
story they read, or perhaps they have an original idea . . .
- Design an make a stained glass window depicting a story featuring an angel.
